Born in 1989, Lourenço Macedo Sampaio is currently No. 2 Principal Viola at Opera North, Professor at the University of Leeds, has collaborated as Section Leader of the Royal Opera House, is currently trialing as Co-Principal of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been regularly invited to perform as Guest Section Leader of the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto – Casa da Música.
He graduated from the Conservatório de Música do Porto, in the class of Professor Jean-Loup Lecomte, with top marks. Winner of the Prémio Jovens Músicos 2015 – Higher Level and Young Musician of the Year 2015, he has appeared as soloist with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Laureates PJM Orchestra. Co-founder of the Anglo-Portuguese Ensemble, he has collaborated with some of the best orchestras in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, namely the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and Staatskapelle Dresden. He graduated in Music with top marks from the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in the class of Professor Ryszard Woycicki, from whom he also received chamber music instruction. Throughout his entire period of studies, he received regular guidance from Ana Bela Chaves, Valentin Stefanov, and Igor Sulyga. In 2014, he completed a Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music as a merit scholar of the Leverhulme Trust, Santander Universities UK, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
In recent years, he has attended masterclasses with Nobuko Imai, Maxim Vengerov, Gérard Caussé, and Yuri Bashmet.
